Set amidst delightful scenery in the heart of the Lune Valley, Casterton is one of the oldest girls' boarding schools, having been founded in 1823. The senior school, in five houses, accommodates 260 girls. There are four separate Houses for VIth formers who take considerable responsibility within the school. An additional junior boarding house accommodates 80 girls. Entry can be from age 8 to VIth form. Day girls are accepted throughout the school and weekly boarding is available in the junior school. The ethos of the school is however that of a full-boarding school with extensive weekend activities. A separate Pre-Prep Department caters for boys and girls aged 4-7.
Entrance examinations are taken in January/February.
The school has extensive games facilities including a swimming pool, tennis, riding (own stables), hockey, canoeing, athletics, etc. Many girls take part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. The outdoor pursuits programme makes full use of the schools unique environement.
It is considered important that girls are encouraged to have high standards of self-discipline. The school has its own resident Chaplain.
Academic work leads to GCSE and A levels, for which a wide range of subjects is available. Girls are prepared for entrance and scholarships to Universities. Results of GCSE and A levels have been consistently good. In 1993 Casterton was top to the national GCSE league tables. The majority of girls remain for A level studies and over 90% of all pupils proceed to University. There is a thriving Music department with its own individual and orchestral practice rooms. Music, ballet and speech and drama examinations are taken regularly. A purpose built Creative Arts Centre was opened in January 1990. A new Science and Mathematics Block followed in September 1995.
A number of pupils have parents living abroad. The school offers a full escort service to Manchester or London airports - both of which have direct travel links.
